Thor Bjørklund & Sønner AS was the world's first cheese grater manufacturer. Thor Bjørklund (1899-1975) from Lillehammer invented and patented the cheese grater in 1925. Bjørklund had for a long time been annoyed that you had to cut the cheese with a knife. Since there was great poverty in Norway at the time and you had to save on most things, Bjørklund wanted to make a knife that cut less of the cheese. Bjørklund was trained as a cabinetmaker and it was therefore natural to take as a starting point the planer he used on a daily basis. This is how he got the idea for the cheese grater, and since the start in 1925, more than 60 million cheese graters have been produced and sold to large parts of the world.
