Opro + Ditte Alstad

Oct 05, 2017Linn Ellevseth

The jewelery series 'Flap' is based on one abstract form with two apparently overlapping parts. They are the same colour, but the "overlapping" part is lighter than the "underneath". This gives a three-dimensional effect, and reinforces the illusion of overlapping.

One part can be seen as a stylized butterfly wing, the other as an enlarged part of a butterfly body. This, in combination with brilliant colours, is a subtle reference to elements in traditional enamel work.

My basic idea is to create "jewel-like" jewelry with glowing, deep colors in transparent enamel - colorful and "lavish", yet tight and sophisticated, jewelry to "make your mouth water", jewelry with a capital S. I want simply to show the enamel and its properties in all their glory, and to create classic jewelery in a new way.

The English name "Flap" plays both on the "overlap" and "flapping" of butterfly wings - movement and dynamics.

Your Alstad

Ditte Alstad is an artisan with jewelery and metalwork as her field. She is a graduate of California State University Long Beach, School of Fine Arts, Department of Jewelry and Metalsmithing.

She has made jewellery, preferably in silver, but also larger works in many different metals.

Much of what Ditte makes is rooted in natural science, directly or indirectly. She is also very interested in the materials' properties and possibilities. In the creative process, she therefore goes back and forth, criss-crossing, between precisely the possibilities of the material, technical solutions, aesthetic expression and function.

Opro

Opro has always been an enamel workshop, and enamel is our specialty. Enameling is a challenging and demanding subject, where nothing is taken for granted. Everything can happen inside an oven at 830 degrees. High standards are set for cleanliness and execution so that the end result is satisfactory.

June Rasch-Olsen is a trained master goldsmith and enameller. She started in Opro Produkter AS in 1998, which at the time was run by her father, Ole Petter Rasch-Olsen. He took over from Finn Jensen, and started Opro in 1976.
