Telthusbakken leads you from Maridalsveien up towards Gamle Aker Kirke, just west of the Akerselva River in Oslo. Here you will find Oslo's most charming row of small wooden houses that lean towards each other up the steep hill. The houses mostly date from the 19th century, when immigrants, mostly craftsmen and workers, settled in the street on the outskirts of what was then Oslo.

Many of the settlers brought their houses from the village with them, which they rebuilt in Telthusbakken, where almost 250 people lived around the middle of the 19th century. At that time, the hill, which a few hundred years earlier was part of the main road between Oslo and Western Norway, marked the divide between poor and rich, with the area from Gamle Aker Kirke and westwards being a wealthy villa area. Today, however, the iconic row along Telthusbakken – with its idyllic gardens, distinctive wooden house structures and charming colours – constitutes what is among the city’s most beautiful streets.
