Brooch Sun wheel
The Solhjul brooch features an interpretation of the historical sun wheel.
Solhjul is one of the oldest historical symbols and was originally used by Finno-Ugric peoples in northern Russia. It often had a practical function, decorating belts or serving as a holder for knives, scissors, keys and other small objects.
The historical jewellery from Juhls Sølvsmie tells the story of a time when nomads on the Finnmark plateau carried their valuables in the form of jewellery. The pieces were easy to carry and brought joy to their owners, while also serving as important items for trade and barter.
As Bergen held a trade monopoly in Northern Norway, jewellery with influences from Bergen as well as Russia, Finland and Sweden can be found in the region. The Historical series consists of replicas, careful adaptations and variations based on these historic pieces.
Juhls Sølvsmie has been based in Kautokeino on Finnmarksvidda since 1959 and was the first workshop for silver jewelery in Finnmark. With a sincere urge to create something beautiful and an irrepressible joy in working, the Juhls family has expressed itself in several forms within crafts and art. Making jewelery has been the most important thing. Every piece of jewelery from Juhls Sølvsmie is made by hand in the workshop in Kautokeino.
