Poster 30x40cm Winter dream at Gaustadtoppen
Print with motif of Majestic Gaustatoppen (1883 m above sea level). Gaustatoppen offers Norway's best, longest (199.3 km) and largest (almost 60,000 square kilometers) view. On good weather days, you can - in addition to looking out over a sixth of Norway - see all the way to Denmark.
At the foot of this gigantic lookout post, located in Tinn municipality in Telemark, is Rjukan, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 119 Norwegian municipalities, you can climb a peak and catch a glimpse of Gaustatoppen, which is visible from Asker in Akershus, among other places. Gaustatoppen was first climbed in 1810, by geologist Jens Esmark and Christen Smith, at a time when many claimed the mountain was the country's highest. Esmark found on his expedition, the purpose of which was to measure its height, that the mountain was lower than Snøhetta. From the same expedition, Esmark was able to report that Norway had the world's highest waterfall in Rjukanfossen, which was reported to the King in Copenhagen. The geologist's discovery would turn out to be something of an exaggeration, as Rjukanfossen is no more than 104 meters high, but thanks to Esmark's reporting, Rjukan is referred to as "the cradle of modern tourism in Norway". "This waterfall is the highest of all known waterfalls, not only in Europe, but even in the whole world." Jens Esmark
