On clear days, one can – in addition to gazing over a sixth of Norway – see all the way to Denmark.

At the foot of this gigantic lookout point, located in the municipality of Tinn in Telemark, lies Rjukan, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In 119 Norwegian municipalities, one can climb a peak and catch a glimpse of Gaustatoppen, which is visible from Asker in Akershus, among other places. Gaustatoppen was first ascended in 1810, by geologist Jens Esmark and Christen Smith, at a time when many claimed the mountain was the country's highest. On his expedition, whose purpose was to measure the height, Esmark found that the mountain was lower than Snøhetta. From the same expedition, Esmark reported that Norway had the world's highest waterfall in Rjukanfossen, which was reported to the King in Copenhagen. The geologist's discovery would prove to be somewhat of an exaggeration, as Rjukanfossen is no more than 104 meters high, but thanks to Esmark's report, Rjukan is referred to as "the cradle of modern tourism in Norway." "This waterfall is the highest of all known waterfalls, not only in Europe, but even in the whole world." Jens Esmark
